1. Harvesting
At Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited, tobacco harvesting is performed using both leaf-only and whole-plant methods. The chosen method impacts the quality and characteristics of the final product.
- Leaf-Only Harvesting: Allows leaves to mature fully before picking.
- Whole-Plant Harvesting: Involves cutting the entire plant when most leaves are ripe.
2. Curing
Curing is essential for drying harvested tobacco leaves to prepare them for further processing.
- Air-Curing: Produces low sugar, high nicotine tobacco, ideal for cigars.
- Flue-Curing: Creates higher sugar content tobacco, typically used in cigarettes.
- Sun-Curing: Naturally dries leaves under the sun, resulting in low sugar, low nicotine tobacco.
3. Fermentation
Fermentation enhances the flavor and aroma of tobacco. By allowing leaves to "sweat" in controlled conditions, this process reduces the harshness and brings out the desired flavors.
4. Final Processing
After fermentation, tobacco undergoes additional processing including sorting, grading, and packing. Leaves are often aged further to develop more complex flavors before being packed for distribution.
